In this episode of T1D Stories, Adrian Gonzalez speaks with Gabe Coury, a longtime member of the Breakthrough T1D community and the first person with T1D to join Adrian’s Logistics Leaders for T1D Cure cycling team. Diagnosed at age four, Gabe shares what he remembers about the early days of living with type 1 diabetes, how his younger brother’s diagnosis made T1D a family journey, and how Breakthrough T1D became a central part of their lives through walks, advocacy, fundraising, and community. Gabe also reflects on how technology — from insulin pumps to CGMs and closed-loop systems — has transformed daily management, and why the Breakthrough T1D Ride has become such a meaningful experience for him.
A Meaningful Moment from the Episode
For Gabe, the Breakthrough T1D Ride is about much more than cycling. It is a chance to be surrounded by people who understand the daily realities of living with type 1 diabetes and who share a common purpose. Reflecting on his experience, he described why the Ride community means so much to him:
“It’s the one weekend out of the year where you can actually be proud of being a diabetic. I’d say it’s almost celebrated…The energy and the support from the moment you check in to the final celebration dinner is a high that I literally ride on for weeks after I’ve crossed the finish line.”
